Bacteria batteries

Fuel cells is something we’ve reported about at a couple of occasions. The basic idea is to use one of our most abundant organic substances, methanol, and break it down into smaller substances gaining energy and free electrons in the process. These “batteries” could then be used to power everything from laptops and notebooks to small MP3 players. However, now we’re advancing on the possibility of using bacteria to produce electricity from e.g. regular glucos, or why not sewage water. So far we haven’t reached a state where there is a real application for these bacteria, although they’ve proven very efficient, but it’s always interesting to see that we can use these tiny creatures for something else than nature first intended.
