AMD is still waiting to launch its highly anticipated K10/Barcelona architecture and many are starting to wonder what’s going on over at AMD. According to the latest rumors they seem to have made a major breakthrough in the manufacturing of Barcelona. AMD has namely received its latest B0 stepping from the factories and the results are supposed to be close to fantastic. There are no indications for exactly how splendid or exactly what AMD has accomplished, but some say that the memory controller of the new architecture has been a much larger success than they had hoped for. Anyway, the conclusion is that AMD can now launch its new processor at a much higher frequency than what was possible with the previous steppings.
From the 1.9-2.5GHz that we’ve been hearing about to about 400MHz more, this is really impressive for a new stepping. This means that we will see quad-core Barcelonas working at up to 2.9GHz.
This is, of course, completely unofficial information, but would it be correct AMD has improved its chances of a successful launch tremendously. AMD will need any performance it can get to take down Intel and the Core 2 architecture.
