Bitboys is a rather unknown company for those who are relatively new to computers, but those who have been around since the end of the 90s and the start of this century Bitboys is a company that offers some amusing memories. Bitboys is graphics circuit manufacturer based in Finland that during its great days was more or less the king of “vaporware”, it simply announced a whole bunch of products that never ended up on the market. The perhaps best known one was the Glaze3D circuit that during the start of 2000 looked very promising on paper with both impressive and unique solutions for optimal 3D performance. Glaze3D was never launched, as you might’ve suspected, and since then things have been rather quiet. However it is still among us, which, evidently, ATI’s purchase is a clear proof of.

Bitboys was apparently worth €35.2 million (~$44 million), or that’s at least what ATI paid to get a hold of the Finnish company. ATI is planning on integrating Bitboys into its own section working with developing graphics circuits for handheld units to improve e.g. the circuits used by mobile phones.

“Handsets are transitioning to hardware acceleration for graphics and multimedia, and the Bitboys team will play a critical role as we drive this key inflection point to make ATI the platform of choice for content providers.”
