The Blu-ray format has been officially dubbed the successor of DVD since HD DVD has retired from the market and the ultimate goal is of course to catch up to and outpace the older and established DVD format. According to Sony, Blu-ray will catch up within three years as it predicts the ratio of sold Blu-ray and DVD movies to be around 40:60 in 2010 and tip over in Blu-ray’s favor the year after that. Blu-ray had 9% of the market at the end of 2007, but has risen to 20% now.

Whether Sony’s estimates will fan out remains to be seen, but with the exploited DVD market and its exaggerated piracy, it doesn’t like an impossibility. If Sony makes the right moves, there is every possibility for Blu-ray to catch up, especially as the amount of Full HD and HD Ready TVs increase by the day.
