Sony Pictures has as the first movie studio released the prices for its Blu-ray movies and it is far from happy reading. The figures released are the wholesale prices and it will be at staggering $23.45. That’s 50% more than today’s DVD movies and then we are comparing wholesale prices to consumers prices. The actual consumer price for Blu-ray movies will most likely be considerably higher than the wholesale price Sony Pictures has announced. The wholesale price for older movies will be $17.95, which according to Sony is the same as the first DVD movies when that technology arrived in 1997. “Some of the movies to be released in the first batch by Sony are The Fifth Element, Desperado, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, Legends of the Fall, and Terminator. Sony’s wholesale price of $23.45 for Blu-ray discs is 56 percent more than the $14.99 it costs to buy a new DVD of Hitch from BestBuy.com. A Terminator DVD is available for $9.99.” For those are staring at the high costs for the Blu-ray player alone should perhaps start to ponder about what the movies will cost. Pressumably many Blu-ray titles will be up to twice as expensive as the DVD version. The question is how long these prices will be that high and perhaps even more intereesting; what will the HD DVD movies cost? Source: Red Herring
