Blue Gene/L itself may not reveal that much for som, but for those who has followed our newsfeed here at NH it is no secret that this is the world’s fastest supercomputer. Blue Gene/L is a supercomputer project led by IBM, and when the top list of the worlds fastest computers was released in an updated version during June 2005, it was the second time IBM’s project was listed and even though they had topped the list earlier on they had doubled their performance which was very impressive. But already back then, we knew that Blue Gene/L had much left to give and now IBM has acknowledged that they finally has built the largest system the Blue Gene/L is designed for.
The result is 65 536 CPU’s and a performance of an incredible 280.6 teraflops. That is more than a doubling of the earlier record of 136.8 teraflops. It is no overstatement to call Blue Gene/L very impressive and there are no other computer systems that even comes near to its performance. Which by the way is going to be used to calculate simulated nuclear blasts and other “demanding” applications
