Buffalo has launched a new external harddrive of its LS-WSGL/R1 series and with LS-WSS240GL/R it has gone with a somewhat different experience. External harddrives are often used as an extension of the storage space. Buffalo has instead chosen to use Solid State Drives instead of mechanical harddrives. This means that you can only get up to 240GB with two 120GB SSD, but the unit will be completely silent, while the access times will be considerably lower than with other models.
Its new LinkStation model will launch at the end of December in Japan and the price is 106,000 YEN (about 1,200 USD). This should exclude most people hunting for external harddrives. We don’t mind fresh thinking, but the questions if how much of an interest there is for external storage solutions with SSDs.
But we will of course see the market grow, especially as prices drop and the capacity increases. We can’t complain about the size or the level of noise these devices emit. Yours truly is most likely not the only one growing tired of external harddrives buzzing in the background.
