AMDZone got a really interesting article about how to build a Fibre Channel array by yourself. Fibre Channel arrays are usually used by big companies as an option to SCSI hard drives.
“… Since Fibre Channel is three times as fast, it has begun to replace the Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) as the transmission interface between servers and clustered storage devices. Fibre channel is more flexible; devices can be as far as ten kilometers (about six miles) apart if optical fiber is used as the physical medium…”
With a cost at only around $230 including almost everything needed for a 2x 18GB Fibre Channel array it is a very competitive price to SCSI technology. And with a performance equivalent to a 15.000 rpm SCSI hard drive in some tests Fibre Channel seems to be very interesting.
