Through the optimized C3 stepping of the Phenom II core AMD was able to launch a new version of the flagship Phenom II X4 965. It has lower power consumption, TDP down from 140W to 125W, and a number of minor updates that together made it almost a whole new processor. AMD’s C3 stepping is said to be spreading to other Phenom II models, but without affecting the TDP rating.
The new versions of Phenom II X4 945 and 955 Black Edition will sport improved power saving features and better DDR3-1333 memory support, but they will both keep their specified TDPs, 95W and 125W.
But the new stepping is more efficient and will most likely make them better overclockers than the older C2 models. They will cost the same, which makes it more than worthwhile to hold off that upgrade purchase until you can spot any of these in stock.
