AMD is continuously improving its graphics card drivers for the ATI graphics card lineup and it has now revealed that the Catalyst 9.3 drives will be the first with official Windows 7 support. It released a preview of the Windows 7 driver back in January and the driver is now stable enough to become official. Even if Windows 7 isn’t very different from Vista and Microsoft’s current Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) there are news to indulge.

The great advantage for AMD is that WDDM 1.1, used in Windows 7, relies on Microsoft’s DirectX 10.1 API. As most of you most likely are aware of, NVIDIA is still lacking a DX10.1 compatible circuit, while AMD has had several for a long time.

Windows 7 will work even better with AMD’s graphics cards and the first drivers for the new operating system are coming along nicely. What NVIDIA will do to tackle this and what the actual impact and difference is, is something only extensive testing can reveal.

AMD’s advance planning is of course a good thing, but at the same time we’re still waiting for the next generation graphics circuits and not the least Windows 7.
