iPhone was launched by LinkSys about a month ago. iPhone is a VoIP phone and you can get a hold of one for as little as $10-$15 if you search thoroughly, although it is mainly sold as a kit with e.g. software costing a lot more. Cisco, which has owned the name since 2000, has thus sued Apple for naming its new mobile phone iPhone. Cisco is open to negotiations and has kept the door open to Apple with various suggestions up until Jobs’ big announcement where he used the same name, without Cisco’s approval. From what it seems there is practically no one who believes that Apple will not be able to stand up in court and we are hardly surprised. How this will end remains to be seen, but the most likely is that we will see negotiations at last, even if Apple’s view on the whole thing is calling it “silly.”
