Cuil, pronounced cool, is a new search engine with the ultimate goal, to challenge Google as the top search engine. Where Yahoo!, MSN, Altavista and the rest have failed Cuil will succeed thanks to a couple of things. First of all, the founders Tom Costello and Anna Patterson met while working at Stanford developing search engine technology, while Tom also have experience from IBM and Anna is a former Google-employee where she was in charge of indexing and the web ranking team. Together with Russel Power, also former Google, they have founded and developed Cuil.

Second, they have web’s largest index combined with content-based relevance methods and results organized by ideas. They also tout complete user privacy since the results are based on content and not user history, I.e. not clicks and page ratings.

“The Web continues to grow at a fantastic rate and other search engines are unable to keep up with it,” said Tom Costello, CEO and co-founder of Cuil. “Our significant breakthroughs in search technology have enabled us to index much more of the Internet, placing nearly the entire Web at the fingertips of every user. In addition, Cuil presents searchers with content-based results, not just popular ones, providing different and more insightful answers that illustrate the vastness and the variety of the Web.”

The results are based on content analysis and then categorized. How the results are presented to the user can then be adjusted and further analyzed through tabs, explanatory images and suggestions as to how to refine your search. Cuil goes beyond the link and web rating analysis used by most search engines to present the page with the best matching content, not just the highest rated site with a matching link.
