Over the last few weeks several reports have spoken out on the availability of DDR3 memory that has started to become a problem for computer builders. Memory manufacturer have started raising DDR3 prices after a rise in demand and lower supply. They have even started selling packages of bundled DDR3 and DDR2 memories. It even looks like the world’s third largest PC builder, Acer, has taken drastic measures to avoid availability problems with its coming DDR3-using computers.

It has simply switched to DDR2 memory modules again and it seems several of the coming notebooks will use DDR2 modules instead of the originally planned DDR3 modules.

Acer originally planned to adopt DDR3 memory for all of its ultra-thin notebooks, but the new strategy has affected its recently launched 11.6-inch Aspire 1410 ultra-thin notebook which adopts DDR2 instead,

Acer’s ways will throw a spanner in the works of the DDR3 manufacturers, but it is still counting on DDR3 to become the leading memory technology next year. For 2009 things look a bit gloomier as DDR3 prices, that are already 50% above equivalent DDR2 chips, will continue to rise.
