PC builder Dell have been trying out many different operating systems in its development bunkers and recently it has been playing with the mobile phone operating system Android for its netbooks. Now that Google has released a genuine netbook OS we’re not surprised to learn that Dell is one of the first to get semi-official support for the operating system. Google Chrome OS is still far from done, but already Dell has released an optimized version of Chromium OS.
Chromium OS is the project name used for Chrome OS and the fact is that the project is completely open source. Dell’s Doug Anson have Chromium OS working on the company’s mini 10v netbook and has shared the complete source code for download for other mini 10v users to try.
Chrome OS
Even if Anson eventually managed to get the wireless Broadcom circuit to work it was highly unstable and he describes the operating system image as follows;
Obviously, this image comes with absolutely no support of any kind and is to be considered highly experimental and completely unstable.
The fact remains that Chrome OS can already be used with our netbooks and we look forward to following the development.
