Dell PowerVault MD1000 is an external storage module out of the ordinary and it’s also one of the first storage systems to use 3.5″ SAS harddrives. SAS (Serial-Attached Storage) is the SCSI markets answer to SATA and is thus a Serial data transferring technology. The result of using SAS harddrives instead of SCSI models is that you can achieve four thimes the bandwidth. PowerVault MD1000 also comes with a pretty impressive storage capacity at maximal 4.5TB by using 15 drives in its U3 chassis. For those who feel this isn’t enough you can connect three of these in the one configuration and create a total capacity of 13.5TB.
Dell PowerVault MD1000 is not for regular users, but for those companies who require both high storage capacity and fast transfer rates. The starting price is at $3570, and then you only get two 36GB harddrives, in other words there is more to get before you’re really satisfied. But if you want your MD1000 system fully stuffed you have to pay close to $19,000.
