Intel chose to go for dual core technology on the consumer market first and the Xeon platform for servers and workstations second. Now dual core Xeon processors are available on the market though, but the first Prescott based models has gotten a cold reception, ironically a lot because of its extreme heat dissipation. In a near future Intel will launch its 65nm Dempsey dual core Xeon processors with its new Bensley platform. This platform is expected to be a step in the right direction for Intel’s bet for lower power consuming processors for servers and workstations. Exactly how well it has done can be found out at Anandtech where they have tested the coming platform. “Bensley is the code name for Intel’s new Xeon platform, which will support both Dempsey and Woodcrest processors and a new chipset, code-named Blackford. Demspey is going to take us well into Q2 of next year, and Woodcrest will appear sometime in the second half of next year. Woodcrest will be a lower wattage part that is focused on performance per Watt.”
