Elpida has announced what it claims to be world’s first 2.5Gbps 1-Gigabit DDR3 SDRAM chip. By using copper as the conductor Elpida was able to scale to higher frequencies at lower voltages. Elpida’s new memory chip can operate at 1.5V with 2.5Gbps bandwidth, or 1.2V with 1.8Gbps. According to Elpida, the current chips operating at 1.5V only achieves 1.6Gbps. Elpida is targeting servers and high-end PCs and hopes that the DDR3 technology will finally become the preferred memory type, in perfect timing with both Intel’s and AMD’s new DDR3 platforms.
