To regular people 100Mbps or 1Gbps are the most common speeds for Ethernet networks. To companies there are solutions for up to 10Gbps but none of these are even close to speed the new company Infinera has demonstrated. It has namely presented a network solution with a transfer rate at mighty 100Gbps. In other words, 10 times the speed of current Ethernet solutions. It is able to reach these speeds by dividing the data transfers into ten 10Gbps streams which is then handled according to Infinera’s specifications for 100GbE.
“These packets which have a special sequence numbering are then reassembled by the receiver. In short, Infinera has bonded 10 parallel 10 Gb/s channels into one logical flow while maintaining packet ordering at the receiver.”
The really good thing about the technology is that you will be able to use today’s 10Gbps networks to reach these speeds. Even if we will hardly see any 100GbE switches on the store shelves the upcoming years this is news that will make it easier to meet the ever growing demand for more network bandwidth in the IT sector.
