Windows Vista wil use a technology called Superfetch that will speed up the use of the operating system the more you use it. Superfetch namely surveys what programs you use and then loads these into the memory before you start them. Which will lead to that your programs will start faster. For this to work at its best you will require a lot of memory. Which might just be the reason for Microsoft’s recommendation of 2GB RAM for Vista. Microsoft is aware of that far from everyone will have this much RAM and therefor Superfetch will also work with USB-memories. “Superfetch adds the memory on the USB key to the system’s virtual memory, which in turn is used to preload applications and data which the user accesses frequently. The USB option offers the ability to upgrade the system’s memory even if there are no physical memory slots, allowing laptop users to increase system speed, according to Alchin.” This is one of the technologies that is suppose to improve the performance in Windows Vista and other are automatic defragmentation of the harddrive and a tool that can find bottlenecks within your system.
