Fab 36 helped Fab 30 to reach 150% capacity

We have earlier reported that AMD’s Fab 30 plant has been working at 150% capacity the last couple of months, which is not only impressive but also a bit confusing. AMD somehow managed to increase the frequency from 20 000 wafers per month to 30 000 wafers per month. A 50% increase from the original capacity. At The Inquirer they claim to know how AMD managed to pull this off and the key is AMD’s new Fab 36. The plant that has been under development for a long time has had its space ready, but the manufacturing didn’t start until a few weeks ago. What AMD did was to move the storage from Fab 30 to Fab 36’s empty rooms which made it possible to raise the production rate. What it will do with Fab 30’s storage now that Fab 36 has started producing is a bit foggy.
