Intel has with its X25 series of Solid State Drives become a major actor on the SSD market and its high-end model X25-E, as in Extreme, is SLC-based with monstrous performance. Intel’s fastest SSD sports read speeds up to 250MB/s and write speed at impressive 170MB/s. Those who aren’t satisfied with this can of course connect multiple drives into a RAID configuration for even better performance or data protection.
At TechReport they did just that and they didn’t settle for connecting two Intel X25-E drives, but four of these superfast SSDs and connect them to an Adaptec RAID 5405 controller card.
This adds up to a storage solution at 128GB (4x32GB) that costs more than $2,000, controller included. The cost per gigabyte is ridiculous, but the performance you get with such a solution is hard to match. Interesting reading for those who wants to know what the perhaps hottest SSD on the market can do in a four-way RAID 0 setup.
