Field Emission Technologies is the company behind the new display technology Field Emission Display (FED). The company has its roots in Sony and its display technology has a lot in common with the SED technology we’ve reported about at a couple of occasions. Field Emission Technologies recently displayed its latest creation to the press and chose start at a small scale with 19.2″ monitors with a 1280×960 resolution. The resolution and the brightness at 400cd/m2 is nothing to really brag about, but things are way different when you look at the contrast ratio. By using a technology similar to CRT the company has been able to reach an impressive contrast ratio at 20,000:1, which is something today’s LCD monitors can only dream about.
Today the FED technology is mainly intended for the professional market and there are still some problems to solve before we will see a commercial solution. The fact that FED will be one out of very few flatscreen technologies offering CRT-like image quality is worth a lot though.
