Fedora Core 6 Test 1 preview

Fedora Core 6 is the coming installation of RedHat’s Linux operating system open to the public. At Phoronix they’ve taken a closer look at the Test 1 beta which was released earlier and while the final product is expected to arrive at the end of September there are already interesting things to say about this beta. E.g. there are no drivers from neither ATI nor NVIDIA that works with X.org 7.1 yet, but these should arrive before the final version will be ready. The new graphical installation with Core 5 has been boosted a little even if it seemed to have some bugs in it. They’ve also looked at Pup; a program to keep track of your programs/RPMs and updates for these, a program which actually appeared already in the last version, but has been tweaked with version 6.

Last but not least they’ve looked at Gnome 2.16 (KDE 3.5.3 is also available as a part of Fedora) and they are pleased with what they see. Some might question the added effects such as transparency, shadows and other flashy things, but to be honest it brings Linux closer to the public and a greater acceptance. People will recognize them and it will be easier to adapt to the new environment.

With perhaps Ubuntu leading them, Fedora is not far behind when it comes to regular computer usage. Linux is really on the verge of becoming something that everyone can use as both installations and simple usage have become easier than ever before.
