Firefox 2.0 has just been released by Mozilla and has to be considered the answer to Microsoft’s launch of Internet Explorer 7. IE7 is in turn MS’ answer to Mozilla’s and Firefox’ success. A lot of Firefox’ popularity comes from the fact that Microsoft neglected IE for several years as it didn’t have any real competition. However, Microsoft has now realized the situation it is in and through IE7 caught up to Mozilla in many ways. At BetaNews they’ve published an article which discuss the two browsers and their respective future. If you want to come to any conclusion it is that Microsoft has done a great job catching up to Mozilla and the question is if FF2.0 is enough.

“But in the short term, at least, Mozilla may find itself with a serious problem: Part of the key to its relative popularity, at least among its user base, is the feeling it gives them of having advantages in performance, functionality and security. If Microsoft is generally perceived to have narrowed or erased that gap, the resulting lull in the usual buzz surrounding Firefox could effectively squelch that organization’s principal means of advertising.”
