Firefox security problems an exaggurated joke?

Yesterday we reported about a fresh security hole found in the Firefox browser which had been presented by hackers at an event called ToorCon. The hole was related to the browser’s handling of JavaScript and would make it possible fot attackers to take control over users’ computers. eWeek has now published an article where they say the whole thing may very well just be a playful hoax which has been extremely exaggurated. One of the speakers at ToorCon, Mischa Spiegelmock, has now made a statement and means that the presentation had a light and playful tone. The flaw they have pointed out is rather hard to use and Spiegelmock has now admitted that he hasn’t succeeded in executing any external code and be able to take control.

“I have not succeeded in making this code do anything more than cause a crash and eat up system resources, and I certainly haven’t used it to take over anyone else’s computer and execute arbitrary code,”

At the same time Spiegelmock blaims his co-presenter regarding the rumor that they have information about 30 other security holes. At least, Spigelmock has no such information but we don’t know for sure what Andrew Wbeelsoi knows.

What might’ve looked like a crisis for Mozilla and Firefox now looks like a farce where humorous hackers failed to deliver.
