AMD is getting closer and closer to the Summer launches of the mid-range platform Lynx and Fusion A processors, which will be backed by Bulldozer-based AMD FX series. The first prices has leaked to the media and among them we see the top model of the Llano family, AMD A8-3550P, priced at below $170.
In previous marketing material it has been made clear that AMD will be pricing the models competitively. Intel simply has performance on its side with the new Sandy Bridge architecture, which forces AMD to keep prices “low”. If the information published on an Asian forum is true AMD should be able to earn quite a lot more money with its coming processors.
The Fusion A series builds on the slightly elderly Llano architecture, which will be somewhat of the affordable range. Even if the CPU portion builds on a several years old architecture (K10.5) Llano has a very powerful graphics processor that will force discrete graphics cards to stretch their legs. It is therefore interesting to see a price range between $70 and $170. The least sist since the latter is said to offer graphics performance comparable to $60 graphics cards.
The AMD FX series will be the new performance solution and if the prices are correct AMD seems to believe that the new processors will battle Intel’s top models of Sandy Bridge. The prices ar between $190 and $320 for the octo-core top model AMD FX-8130P. This can be compared to the current flagship Phenom II X6 1100T with six cores, which costs around $150.
Even if we shouldn’t take in all unconfirmed information without critique these prices do look reasonably. All comes down to the performance and how Intel counters this with possible new launches or price cuts.
AMD is expected to launch the Llano platform in the middle of June, most likely the 14th. The Bulldozer architecture and the AMD FX series could launch as soon as the week before, but the details on the clock frequency and CPU performance are still somewhat vague.
