Intel haven’t been all that kind to those to jumped at the first wave of SSDs. After Intel launched the second generation of SSDs sporting 34nm technology the so called G1 units have ended up the shadow. Intel recently released a new firmware with TRIM support for the 34nm drives, something the G1 drives still lack and will most likely never get. Intel is even planning the retirement of the first generation of SSD in August next year.

We know that Intel will release new and updated version of its 34nm drives in Q2 2010 and then it will stop taking orders for its G1 drives. The last shipment of 50nm solid state drives will head out on August 7th.

What kind of treatment the G1 owners will get until then, and after the retirement, is hard to say. Since the support has already been a bit poor we have no real hope for it to improve. Intel’s decision will affect all X25-M and X18-M models made with 50nm technology.
