DID YOU KNOW......
1. the first computer was not invented by John von Neumann? That honor belongs to Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, who founded the world's first computer company.
2. ENIAC was developed as a weapon of war, a machine that could calculate firing tables for World War II artillery guns?
3. by the fall of 1945, just as the war was over, ENIAC was finally up and running? It had taken 200,000 man-hours of work and cost $486,804.22.
4. ENIAC cost $650 per hour in electricity when it was running idle?
5. ENIAC was labeled the Giant Brain by the press? It occupied over 1,800 square feet, weighed 30 tons, used hundreds of miles of wiring, and 18,000 vacuum tubes!
6. RCA had a chance to be involved with constructing the first computer but declined to do so?
7. Eckert used hungry mice that he kept in cages to determine the best kind of wiring to construct ENIAC? The wire least appetizing to the mice was the one he selected.
8. IBM was the manufacturer of the punch cards that were used to load numbers into ENIAC for making computations?
9. six women were chosen from among the several hundred human "computers" to work on ENIAC, making them the world's first computer programmers? (They were: Frances Bilas Spence, Jean Bartik, Ruth Lichterman Teitelbaum, Kathleen McNulty, Elizabeth Snyder Hotberton, and Marlyn Wescoff Meltzer; three of the women in this group married ENIAC engineers.)
10. Grist Brainerd submitted a report on ENIAC to the Applied Mathematics Panel at the Moore School, and although he understood little of the science, he was credited with the parentage of the first computer?
11. Art Draper, a Remington Rand executive, came up with the idea of using the computer to predict the results of the election between Stevenson and Eisenhower based on early returns? ENIACs original prediction was off by only 4 electoral votes out of 531-better than 98 percent accuracy.
12. on February 4, 1964 Eckert and Mauchly received the patent on the computer-no. 3,120,606? But, Sperry Rand bought the rights to the patent, thus putting the company in a position to control the fast-growing computer industry into the 1980s.
13. the invention of ENIAC opened up computer technology to all generations that have followed ever since?
