Title: Age of Empires III
Sequel to: Age of Empires II: Age of Kings
Release date: Not official yet, but everything points to a Fall 2005 release. ES has commented that the game's structure is finished and only needs polishing.
Gameplay: Age of Empires III will have brand-new features but will continue the traditional "Age of" gameplay:
Civilizations: The game will feature 8 civilizations that will be share common characteristics. ES has mentioned, however, that all of the civilizations are customizable, so two British players might have different tech trees. Known nations in the game include:
The British: Have a better economy and make villagers faster. Known unique units are the Redcoat Musketeers and Longbowmen.
The French: Can more easily ally with Indian tribes. Known unique unit is the Courreur, a woods runner that acts as a light infantry unit.
The Spanish: Get better support from their Home City. Known unique unit is the Redolero, infantry man with sword and buckler.
Unconfirmed Civilizations:
The Dutch: Colonized the Caribbean and Hudson River area. Good guess.
The Portuguese: Colonized the Caribbean and Brazil. Good guess.
The Germans: An old German flag is seen in two of the screenshots. Good guess.
The Russians: Colonized Alaska. Average guess.
The Swedes: Colonized modern-day Delaware. Average guess.
The Japanese: A Samurai is part of the concept art. Poor guess.
The Italians: A Stradiot is part of the concept art. Poor guess.
The Swiss: Hinted by ES at one occasion. Poor guess.
Ages: Discovery, Colonial, Industrial, and Imperial ages. We know that at the start of the Discovery age, you will have a ship off the coast of the New World and you will find a place to claim and settle. The traditional way of aging still stands. The game will span the years of 1492 to circa 1850.
Resources: There are only 3 resources in Age of Empires III. Additionally, no drop-off points are needed; the resources go straight to your stockpile. Known resources are food, wood, and coins.
Diplomacy and technology: There are two new areas of gameplay in the game.
Home City: This is the place where your settlers came from. There is evidence that the Home City will play a large part in your technology tree. Sending resources back to your Home City can grant you upgrades, technology, or perhaps troops and supplies.
Native Tribes: Many Native camps will be on the map during the game (probably 4 in a 1v1.) The Natives will have different identities like Sioux, Iroquois, etc. Building a trading post next to their camp will ally you with a particular tribe. They will be able to trade with you and might even fight along with you. During regular games, there is even a new victory condition, which is to ally with the majority of Native tribes on the map.
Maps: The game, as of right now, will be only about the conquest of the New World. Fighting in Europe or other places in the world will not be included, but there is still the strong possibility of making scenarios that are located outside the New World.
Units: Taken from the screenshots, we can deduce that the following units are in the game (not officially):
Villagers: Both male and female, and maybe different races too.
Infantry: Pikemen or Halberdiers, Foot Archers, Musketeers, Riflemen
Cavalry: With different weapons such as bows, swords, rifles and pistols.
Siege: In this game siege will also play a major part on the battlefield. There are 2 sizes of cannons shown in the screenshots.
Ships: Much bigger than in other "Age of" games, ships will play the traditional roles of transport, fishing, and combat.
Trade: Caravans or supply wagons, and railroads, which replace trade routes in the final age.
Miscellaneous Info: Buildings that collapse can injure and/or kill units standing nearby. Cannon balls that are fired can roll on the ground and injure/damage anything in their paths. The population limit will also be raised from previous games.
Single-Player: The campaign included in Age of Empires III will be divided in 3 acts of 8 scenarios each, for a total of 24 scenarios. ES has commented that each scenario should take about 40 minutes to complete, which gives the player 16 hours of gameplay in single-player only. The story is about the family of Morgan Black, a man of Scottish descent who lands in North America in the early 16th century. The campaign will follow the family through real historical events, up to 1850.
Multi-Player: Eight civilizations can be played online. Age of Empires III will ship with an integrated online matchmaker (probably a newer version of ESO.) Online, your rating will be based on your Home City level. It is possible that you can be level 1 using one nation and level 50 using another.
Graphics: ES has declared that one of their goals was to produce the RTS with the best graphics ever seen. This comes in different parts:
Modified Bang! engine: Age of Mythology's Bang! engine will be used in a largely-modified version. Objects like water have been totally reprogrammed to create magnificent effects.
Havoc 2 engine: This physics model engine has been used in many FPS games, but this is the first time it will be applied to an RTS game. Buildings can be destroyed piece-by-piece by cannon fire, units can fly into a lake when blown away, or can have their limbs blown off instead!
Vertex Shader 3 and Pixel Shader 3: These are small programs that run on the graphics card and allow for a lot of 3D computations to be completed faster.
Sound and Music: No information so far.
Screenshots: Fifteen screenshots have been released so far. You can view them here.
