"NVIDIA Disclosed Its New Pricing Strategy [6:20 pm]
Today NVIDIA announced a new pricing strategy determining the recommended prices on the graphics cards based on NVIDIA’s chips. According to the today’s press release, NVIDIA has added a new set of board level products and price points designed to address the high-end, midrange and value retail market segments. This new strategy includes a family of desktop products ranging from $99 to $399:
· GeForce2 MX 200 32MB - $99;
· GeForce2 MX 400 64MB - $129;
· GeForce2 Pro 64MB - $199;
· GeForce3 64MB - $399.
In this respect, we would like to make a couple of comments:
· The rumors about GeForce3 based graphics cards to be much cheaper than it had been expected before have been confirmed. NVIDIA reduced significantly the recommended price of GeForce3 based graphics cards, which made all graphics card manufacturers drop the starting cost of their products. By the time the cards begin selling in retail, which is expected to take place in May, the price is supposed to get even lower that’s why it should be quite possible to get a GeForce3 for about $360-370 at that time.
· The list given above doesn’t include GeForce2 Ultra, as you may have noticed. The thing is that now GeForce2 Ultra has fallen into NVIDIA’s disgrace, because it outperforms GeForce3 in some tests due to high chip frequency. Although judging by the mentioned list it becomes evident that GeForce2 Ultra should fit into the $299 price category.
· As you can see, NVIDIA focuses its marketing policy on 64MB graphics cards. Even MX 400 value solution is advised to be produced with 64MB of memory. In fact, we have already pointed out several times, that there is currently no need in 64MB cards in any of the today’s gaming applications. However, very low memory prices allow NVIDIA to double the memory size at very low expense, which makes these cards more attractive for potential customers".
I Danmark kan vi optimistisk forvente priser på G3 på omkring 3.600 kr. i løbet af maj måned - ingen dokumentation. (Endring, sorry: meget optimistisk pris i DK !
