Jo det är så att en polare till mig (amerikan) skall fixa sig en ny dator och frågade mig det här...
"After learning about the 50 million different types of RAM u can buy these days (what ever happened to just simple RAM?) I've decided there are three options for me to custom build a new PC online: a Dell, a Compaq, or a MicronPC. I chose these because they are not the very cutting edge but are just below it. They are remarkably close in price (about $1800) with only minor differences in configuration. See below the important specs:
#1
Dell Dimension 8100
1.5 GHz P4
256 MB RDRAM
17 in trinitron monitor
64 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce3 graphics card
40 GB HD
16x DVD ROM drive
Harman Kardon HK-695 Surround sound with subwoofer
1 year service agreement
#2
Compaq Presario 7000
1.2 GHz Athlon (266 MHz front bus speed)
512 MB DDR SDRAM (Compaq gives u a free RAM upgrade to 512 MB)
17 in trinitron monitor
64 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce3 graphics card
40 GB HD
CD-RW (12x/4x/32x) drive
JBL platinum speakers
1 year service agreement
#3
MicronPC Millennia max XP2
1.3 GHz Athlon (266 MHz front bus speed)
256 MB DDR SDRAM
17 in trinitron monitor
64 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce3 graphics card
40 GB HD
16x48x DVD ROM drive
Atlec Lansing ACS56 5 piece speaker system
1 year service agreement
Evidently the athlon chip is the fastest chip you can buy if you want to play games. It consistently beats even the 1.7 GHz P4 chip in almost every category according to PCWorld. The MicronPC Millennia max XP2 won PCWorld's #1 spot.
This would be an easy decision to make (I would get one of the Athlons) except for the fact that Dell is the only computer manufacturer to get an "Outstanding" rating for service and support and I get a 10% discount on the Dell because of my employer so I would save about $180 bucks on the Dell.
Questions:
Which one would you buy if you were me?
Would you buy the GeForce3 card or save $400 and just get the GeForce2 card (with 64MB RAM)? That would drop the price to around $1600 total for these computers.
Is it worth it to get a 19 inch monitor?
Would you change any of the specs above?
Would I ever notice the difference between a 1.5 GHz P4 and the Athlon 1.33 GHz?"
