VPN or Virtual Private Network is a private network that provides secure access to an organisation’s network using the internet. It uses encryption and security mechanisms to allow only the authenticated user to access the private data. VPN is effective in providing a confidential network that can be used to exchange important data; it has wide application in corporate communication. It enables users to exchange voice, video or data while providing complete privacy for the transfer of the information. Many employees use VPN to access their companies network from places away from their offices, the network is quite useful to the employees when they are travelling to places. It also facilitates users to exchange data as though they are directly connected to the network. VPN service connects the various offices of the organisations in a cohesive network. It prevents the disclosure of information using encryption that allows the unauthorised users to see only the encrypted data. Sender authentication prevents the unauthorised users from accessing the VPN. The encryption of data allows only the computer sending it to decrypt the data and provides total privacy while exchanging data. Passwords and keys are essential to decrypt data by the user receiving it. There are specific components to build VPN and these components include NAS or Network Access Server and VPN server. Remote access VPN is widely used; it allows individual users to establish a secure connection with a remote computer network. VPN connectivity is also deployed on routers to allow any connected device to use the VPN while it is enabled.
