Fujitsu is the latest laptop manufacturer that has now announced that it will recall large quantites of the Sony-made batteries, which has caused laptops to catch on fire and explode. Recently we found out that Sony had been aware of the problems with batteries for over a year and we’re most pretty sure the mood at the battery making department isn’t that jolly. Fujitsu has decided to recall 287 000 batteries, which brings the total of number of manufacturers up to six and they’ve all together recalled over 7.5 million Sony-made batteries for laptops. It’s now expected that several smaller manufacturers will follow Sony’s request and recall computers with these batteries.
Sony is counting on that this massive recall will cost the company $250 million. But the total cost of this will be a lot higher, but how much is impossible to tell before all of this has settled.
“Sony directed manufacturers to launch recalls of laptops using its defective batteries last Friday. It confirmed that the cause of the fire problem was due to small metal particles coming loose within the battery and causing a short circuit, although it said that such an occurrence was rare.”
