GeForce 7800 GTX is nVidia’s new flagship on the graphic card-market and is currently the fastest card available. Something many have been pondering on is that the 7800 GTX GPU is clocked relatively low. 430MHz is about the same as 6800 Ultra and even if the 7800-series’ more pipelines gives it a significant advantage it seems there should be more to get on the frequency-front. At Guru3D they’ve received indications that something is very fishy with 7800 GTX and its frequencies. They have namely verified that 7800 GTX automatically overclocks when you start up a 3D-application, from 430MHz to 470MHz. Also when the cards are overclocked to begin with the GPU-frequency is increased 40MHz. Which probably means that nVidia has added a dynamic overclocking function without telling. This is of course something to question but the fact that some manufacturers even sell their cards overclocked from factory at the very precise 470MHz makes the whole thing even harder to digest. At Guru3D they’ve tried to solve this riddle but so far they haven’t come up with a final answer. It might even be that some parts of the GPU on 7800 GTX are clocked at different frequencies, but nVidia’s reply to this is, the least to say, vague.
