GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB has had to settle for 96 active shader processors in the past, but now that NVIDIA has launched its new GeForce 8800 GT chip with 112 SPs, NVIDIA realized that the card would actually outperform its bigger brother. The new entry model is indeed superior to the more expensive GTS model and the solution to this was to launch a new version of GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB, also sporting 112 shader processors. The first benchmarks with the new card has now been published over at Hardwarecanucks, where they’ve taken the card for a quick spin in the new Crysis demo to see what the new GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB 112SP can do.

The card is clearly faster now, but the margin to the GeForce 8800 GT is very narrow, although the 8800 GT used in the review is a factory overclocked card from eVGA. Anyhow, it seems the new GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB will be faster, but we’re still wondering if it will be able to take 8800 GT when it comes to bang for the buck.
