Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI Quad – 4 graphic cards!

Gigabyte was the first manufacturer to start experimenting with SLI-technology. It started with developing a graphic card based on two 6600GT cores on the same PCB. Recently it has been working on an even faster version based on two 6800GT-cores on the same card. But the story doesn’t end there, far from it, it has namely been experimenting with mainboards. There has namely appeared som informatino that a prototyp card supporting nVidia-based dual core-cards is on the way.

The mainboards goes by the name Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI Quad and has four PCI Express slots available for up to four SLI-compatible graphic cards from nVidia. To be able to create support for up to four graphic cards it has had two integrate two nForce4 SLI chiosets on the same board. The really amusing thing is that it has used both Intel and AMDs versions of the chipset. Intel’s for the northbridge and AMD’s for the southbridge, but the board only supports Intel’s socket 775 processors. Details on the card are so far very vague but four graphic cards in SLI should be able to offer quite some performance that much we know. It’s hardly easy to come up a defense for what a monster like this would cost, but then again, whocares?
It might be worth mentioning that ATI’s Crossfire-technology supports up to 32 graphic circuits, but that is hardly feasible on a single mainboard.
