The manufacturers are apparently lining up for the new budget laptop market. ASUS has, more or less, created a new niche with the Eee PC, a niche more companies want a part of. Last night we found out that Acer is working on a competitor for the Eee. New information reveals that Gigabyte is also working on a budget laptop, slated for June. The PC is based on Intel’s Basic Platform, which has been designed for high mobility and low cost. The total power consumption of the platform is 8W with a 1.6GHz Diamondville processor and 945GSE chipset with an integrated DX9 graphics circuit.
Gigabyte will use a 7-9″ display and even if Gigabyte will be designing the PC, the manufacturing will be handled by Compal Electronic and Quanta Computer, which already handles the making of Gigabyte’s notebooks.
Several other manufacturers are expected to launch PCs based on Intel’s Basic Platform, and we’re eager to see how they will stand out, and if the platform will be able to compete with ASUS Eee PC.
