GT300 tapes out, launch in 2009 possible

NVIDIA has gone big with the new graphics circuit architecture for GT300. Unlike AMD that has been AMD targeting the performance segment instead. Stories are going around that GT300 will substantially different from GT200, which have its pros and cons. The chips is really big and complex, which means it takes some time to get the manufacturing started. NVIDIA has taken a big step forward though, as GT300 has cleared tape-out.

This would mean that the architecture has been nailed and ready, something that should have been done in the middle of July, which means they missed the target without two weeks. This is of course bad, but still much better than some previous attempts.

Alas, there is still much to do before GT300, or whatever it will be called, can launch. Not that least there is still much that can go wrong as Semi Accurate says there is at least 22 weeks of work left, doing circuit manufacturing, card design and bug searches. That is if everything goes as planned for NVIDIA.

Considering the size and complexity we’re dealing with here, GT300 is a giant, it would be an achievement like no other if it did. Would NVIDIA managed to tie things up and launch in December 2009, most likely paper launch in that case, but most likely NVIDIA’s DirectX 11 GPU won’t appear in any significant amount before next year.
