PlayStation 3 is one of the most expensive video game console ever made and no matter the functionality you can’t neglect the high price, practically an account-draining whirlpool. Many are hoping and waiting for the first price cut, but it seems this could take a while. In an interview with Game Informer Sony Computer Entertainment America head man, Jack Tretton, has revealed that the cost of making PlayStation 3 is hard to reduce. At the same time he confirms that they will not use the same swift and drastic price cuts as they did with PlayStation 2.
“The reason for the shallower pricing curve? According to Tretton, the increased investment in R & D and hardware makes the system “a lot more difficult to cost reduce” than the PS2. “There’s a heck of a lot more under the hood and it costs us more money to make it,”
Sony has no interest in consumers sitting around waiting for a price cut, but at the same time it sounds completely reasonable that PlayStation 3 will get several smaller price reductions later on. We already know that Sony is losing hundreds of dollars with each sold console.
