The HD DVD has been going downhill over the last few weeks and now that Toshiba has officially withdrawn from the HD format market, there are tons of stores sitting on more or less unsellable HD DVD players, at least with previous product descriptions. Thus, several stores have changed the descriptions of their HD DVD players instead of slashing prices. Play.com renamed “Toshiba HD-EP30 HD DVD Player” to “Toshiba HD-EP30 HDMI Upscaling Player with HD DVD High Definition Playback”. In other words, focus is moved from the HD DVD support to the player’s upscaling capabilities.
Whether this will really work remains to be seen, but we can’t blame them for trying. There are plenty of HD DVD players in stock, but a format with no future will not attract any customers.
