The new HDMI specification, HDMI 1.3, was recently published and with this the growing interface has had its conditions improved when it comes to handling the digital signals of today and tomorrow. We have earlier written about several of the software improvements it has achieved through support for Deep Color and other technologies, which will make the handling of high resolution video formats more efficient. But what we haven’t heard about was that it has also added new hardware specifications in the form of a smaller HDMI connector. HDMI Mini connector is an addition to the HDMI 1.3 specification that will make it possible to integrate HDMI support into smaller portable units such as PDAs, TabletPCs and similar.
Among other things the HDMI Mini connector, which is just a smaller version of the regular HDMI connector, can be used with digital video cameras or portable DVD players so that you can easily connect these to a high-res TV and send both image and sound through the same cable. Truly interesting if we could get compatible interfaces for the stationary and portable market, now we just have to wait for the first products sporting the HDMI 1.3 specifications to arrive.
