Hynix has announced industry’s first 1 Gigabit GDDR5 DRAM chip. GDDR5 is the next generation graphics card memory and is right now being evaluated by ATI/AMD, NVIDIA and possibly Intel, and will be used with the coming generations of graphics cards. The new memory chip operates at 5 Gbps bandwidth and processes up to 20 GB/s over a 32-bit bus. Hynix says that thanks to the 66 nm manufacturing process, the chip consumes less power, but that it has also been equipped with time delay adjustments, error correction and jitter control technology. At this stage, GDDR5 is about twice as fast current GDDR3 chips and we have to say that we’re really looking forward to the first cards using GDDR5.
