NAND flash is truly one of the hottest memory technologies of today and it feels like everyday there is something new to report about. It seems the development has been moving a bit too fast forward though as the five companies Hynix, Intel, Micron, Phison and Sony feel there isn’t enough efficient standards, which makes it hard to make the circuits compatible with products and each other. These companies has therefore founded the Open NAND Flash Interface Working Group, whose goal is to improve interoperability between different NAND flash memory units.
The ONFI group hopes to achieve a standardized interface for NAND flash which would speed up the launches of NAND flash-based products, while at the same time it would make it possible to launch other types of products that use NAND flash memory.
