IBM recently announced a new WiFi chip that will allow transfer speeds up to ten times faster than today’s standard. IBM has chosen to use the 60GHz region instead of today’s WiFi standards that uses 2.4Ghz or 5GHz frequencies. Today’s WiFs has a transfer speed between 10Mbps and 100Mbps, IBM’s millimeter standard (802.15.3.c.) will be able to reach up to 1000Mbps (1Gbps). An interesting use would be streaming TV signals which should work just fine at these speeds. Even if it is working on finding customers for its new solution the new chip isn’t expected become a standard until 2007/2008. Source: The Journal News
