IBM integrates Cell with its mainframe for the next generation MMORPGs

0

IBM is one of the world’s leading supercomputer manufacturers and one of the companies responsible for the development of the Cell Broadband Engine. Cell has been paired with AMD Opteron processors in IBM blade servers before, where the workload was divided in between them, letting them both do what they do best. IBM has taken this one step further now. Cell will be integrated with IBM’s mainframes and make them extremely wells suited for e.g. MMORPGs. Together with the Brazilian company Hopolon Infotainment they will build and test the system using Holopon’s software. The goal is to design a fast and powerful mainframe for the next generation 3D online games. More information about the cooperation and the new system is available in IBM’s press release.
