IBM has together with the fresh company Rapport taken a closer look at a new processor technology they call Kilocore. It is a processor with over 1000 cores, more precise 1025, that will result in very good performance at low power consumption. We know since earlier that IBM are interested in working with processors with multiple cores as both its POWER and Cell architectures use this. Whether it be the number of cores or exeuction units Rapport’s new creation wins by TKO. While AMD and Intel are starting to get warm with their dual-core and soon to comeq uad-core architectures IBM and Rapport is thinking of using a processor with 1025 cores.
Of course these cores are not as advanced as the ones AMD and Intel have, but also Intel has revealed processors with dozens, or even hundreds, of cores in roadmaps. Kilocore1025, which the CPU will be called, doesn’t seem to be any form of a performance beast though, as it is intended for mobile units with high power efficiency demands, supposedly perfect for this architecture.
“There were few details on how fast the Kilocore1025 may be, but IBM claims that the processor will enable a user “to view streaming live- and high-definition video on a low-power, mobile device at five to 10 times the speed of existing processors.”
Neither Rapport nor IBM wants to reveal when its new architecture will arrive, but we will most likely not see any Kilocore processor in our PCs anytime soon. Perhaps inside mobile phones or portable multimedia players.
