IBM Power6 working at 6GHz

IBM hasn’t just announced new WiFi chips, but has also been working on its next POWER CPU, IBM Power6. It is a creation different from the other processors we have today. IBM has basically adapted the market’s course towards multithreading, but at the same time followed in Intel’s footsteps with high frequencies. Power6 will namely work at a frequency of 4GHz to 5GHz, but already IBM has a chip in its lab working at 6GHz. IBM claims its progress with its manufacturing processes has made it possible to reach such frequencies without any big problems with extreme heat dissipation. This is possible due to the 65nm SOI technology. IBM doesn’t hold back when it comes to summarizing the performance its coming CPU either.

“All told, IBM claims that Power6 will be twice as fast as competing server processors from Intel, AMD and Sun Microsystems.”

We can expect Power6 sometime during next year, but we will most likely hear more about IBM’s new processor architecture until then.
