Intel 45nm dual-core in 2008

Intel will launch the first processors based on the new Core architecture this summer and this seems to be the start of a whole new era of power efficient processors for Intel. After the launch of Core quad-core processors and 45nm manufacturing processors are at the top of the “to do-list”. The first quad-core processor is expected to be launched in 2007 and has been code-named Kentsfield. In reality this is more or less two dual-core Conroe processors merged into one package. They will not be made with 45nm technology as Intel is not expected to release the first 45nm processors until the mddle of 2008.

Intel takes the secure route and is planning to launch two dual-core processors with 45nm technology, Penryn and Wolfdale, which will replace Merom and Conroe where both processors are dual-core models with improved manufacturing process. Quad-core models will have to wait until there is proof of the 45nm technology’s quality. Both Penryn and Wolfdale use a new architecture, known as Nehalem. Most likely a further improvement of the Core architecture, but Intel is clearly showing that in the future it will launch new micro architectures when transitioning to a new and more efficient manufacturing process.
