Intel develops hybrid laser for faster silicon chips

Intel has been working together with University of California to develop a laser that will make it economically possible to use optic data transfers inside silicon circuits. Similar technology is already used in other areas but is too expensive in consumer electronics today. By combining indium phophside with silicon they’ve managed to create a laser that makes it possible to use photon technology inside e.g. computers. Unfortunately it will take some time before we will see a commerical technology, but this is without a doubt a big towards speeding up the internal communication of silicon circuits.
