Intel display dual core Xeon with 16MB L3 cache

Small preview imageIntel has for the last couple of years been getting more and more competition on the server market, which has be tough considering that it used to be almost completely dominant. AMD and Opteron changed that and Intel is really struggling to catch up with its Xeon processor series. However, it has not forgotten how to make impressive processors and one of the Xeon processors it presented at the Solid State Conference was really something out of the ordinary. It is a Xeon processor with dual cores that supports multithreading and except for a 1MB L2 cache each the two cores share a massive 16MB L3 cache. The frequency of the cores is at 3.4GHz and a TDP (Thermal Design Power)at 150 watts.

This is according to Intel the x86 based processor with the most transistors and largest cache it has ever revealed. As a a comparison we can say that Athlon 64 FX-60 has 233 million transistors, which is almost down right puny vilket compared to the 1 328 million the new Xeon chip has.
